Car issues, my car miss fires or skips a lot what could it b

It only happens once and awhile, but today it was really bad. Every time i used the gas or press on the pedal, it skips or miss fires. I don't think it is my transmission, because it doesn't jump on me or anything, it just almost wants to stall but it doesn't, any ideas on what this could be?
